Late in 1999, Fr. Keohan, then P.P. of this parish asked a few people to look at the needs of the community. The parish development project group was set up and a plan of action was put together and research undertaken. This led to a committee who organised fundraising activities including the parish lotto.
A survey carried out by a group revealed that 18.6% of the population of the parish were over 65 years of age. The national average is 11.5% so it transpired that in fact Turners Cross has the highest rate of over 65’s than any other parish in the country. It was decided that the provision of a day care and social centre for the elderly was vital.
On the 9th of September 2004, the doors were opened to the day care centre for the over 65’s. The cost of construction was €1.35m. It is build on the site of the old Bandon railway line and behind the church grounds so it is right in the heart of the parish.
It is designed to be a flexible as possible and it is also used by the active elderly groups in the evenings. Because the centre is a statutory / voluntary partnership, it is funded by the National lottery and health board grants and a substantial contributions from the parish development fund.
Staff in the centre consists of a nurse/manager, 3 care attendents and a chef. It is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and applications to attend are made through the public health nurse. Some of the facilities available include:
- Bathing/Showering facilities

- Hairdressing
- Physiotherapy
